This entertainment district plays host to mass flower displays created by local nurseries as well as the official municipal rose festival display built by the Department of Parks and Cemeteries of the Mangaung Municipality. Part of the festival is a gardening competition, with bus tours from the Waterfront to the winning gardens during the days of the festival. http://mangaungrosefestival.co.za 7-16 OCTOBER As part of the Open Gardens Safari series run by many small towns in the country, the Little Karoo village of Barrydale on the touristy R62 has its turn with Barrydale in Bloom. This charming, characterful town is renowned for its historical and natural attractions and is surrounded by vineyards and fruit orchards, mountains and valleys, all of which combine to give it a very special appeal. During the Open Gardens Safari, visitors are taken on a tour through Barrydale and adjacent Smitsville, with more than 20 gardens on show, ranging from quirky vegetable patches to sizeable farm gardens, and everything in between. Arts exhibitions, craft displays and other peripheral events make up a full roster for travellers passing through. www.barrydale.co.za 26-28 OCTOBER SA’s premier wine show, the WineX Wine Festival, is now in its 17th year and promises Gauteng wine lovers the greatest selection of wines under one roof.
