19 The Blackanese Sushi & Wine Bar • Operated by inspirational restaurateur Vusi Kunene, this intimate Afro-Asian fusion establishment, adorned with chopsticks and upturned miso bowls, has become a Maboneng institution, where political heavyweights rub shoulders with student entrepreneurs and artists. Kunene’s menu pits California rolls, sashimi and nigiri alongside distinctly South African biltong sushi and braaied prawns with Thai rice. The in-house mixologist boasts an extensive repertoire and there are also sushi-making classes on offer. Even the biggest ham-fisted dolt will be able to produce a passable California roll.
