in our local motoring landscape. This month we celebrate another Toyota hero in the form of our cover car – the Yaris – which, from humble beginnings as far back as the 1950s in an endeavour to create an affordable car for all people, became an eco warrior and trendsetting model for the brand today. It spearheaded many milestones for Toyota. It's perhaps no coincidence that the little Yaris is also making its mark in local motorsport, building on the successes of Jan Hettema and his peers. So we encourage you to enjoy this read, from learning about the origins of the Yaris (page 36) to armchair travelling through Portugal in one (page 26) and taking to the streets of Jozi to share in the beat of city life in hip and trendy Maboneng Precinct, a stone΄s throw from Constitution Hill, where the cover image of our hero was photographed (page 16). There is loads more, besides, like learning how to pack for light travel over a weekend, owners who love their cars to the max, experimenting with how to best capture great images in the outdoors, and events in your area not to miss out on. Enjoy! While we always celebrate the successes that have come from this, it is easy to forget that it is the people behind the brand who have made it all possible. One such person who has made his mark in both local and international motorsport was the legendary double Springbok Jan Hettema, who recently passed away tragically. He was a true motoring and motorsport enthusiast. For Toyota, he set various records and was Toyota’s first national rally champion. For many years, he was the organiser of the Total Economy Run, in which Toyota consistently set new benchmarks and class records. So it is with fondness that we remember him and celebrate his achievements. He was a great figure ABOVE: Motorsport legend Jan Hettema, always active and involved in motoring events in one form or another, in the last years of his life. zone EDITORIAL Editor: François Rabe Tel 021-530-3311 toyotazone@ramsaymedia.co.za Editorial Director: Mzo Witbooi Contributors: Molly Green, Von Krause, Villiers Steyn, Jake Venter, Ebrahim Moolla, Romi Boom TOYOTA SOUTH AFRICA Senior Manager: Communications: Clynton Yon, tel 011-809-2810 Toyota South Africa Motors (Pty) Ltd PO Box 481, Bergvlei, 2012 Tel 011-809-2557 Fax 011-809-9557 www.toyota.co.za Toyota Customer Care: 0800-139-111 RAMSAYMEDIA SBC PUBLISHING Group Publisher: Neil Piper Production Manager: Judy Romon Promotions Manager: Amanda Africa Chief Sub Editor: Alan Valkenburg Lead Designer: Leilani Solomon Designer: Tauriq Loofer RamsayMedia Directors: Terry Moolman, Neil Piper, Tim Holden, Anton Botes, Cornelios Vamvadelis, Jacques Breytenbach DIGITAL TEAM Digital Business Manager: Wendy Lucas Group Developer: Cicero Joseph Campaign Manager: Nawhaal Fakir Group Digital Designer: Bianca Liebenberg Webmaster: Lizelle Leonard ADVERTISING SALES Group National Sales Manager: André Stadler, tel 011-449-1077 Sales Consultant: Michael Parr, tel 011-449-1089 RAMSAYMEDIA CAPE TOWN HEAD OFFICE Tel 021-530-3100 Fax 021-530-3336 36 Old Mill Road, Ndabeni, 7405 PO Box 180, Howard Place, 7450 JOHANNESBURG OFFICE Caxton House, 368 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall, 2196 PO Box 78132, Sandton, 2146 Tel 011-449-1100 Fax 011-449-1104 My Toyota Zone is published by RamsayMedia.
